Associazione Calcio Milan S.p.A vs Arsenal Football Club

Milan determined to avoid Arsenal repeat

AC Milan's last three UEFA Champions League campaigns have ended in a round of 16 defeat by English opponents and they will be anxious to avoid another home loss against Arsenal FC. AC Milan will be anxious not to repeat the mistakes that have led to their UEFA Champions League exits at the hands of Premier League opponents in recent years when they welcome Arsenal FC.
• The Italian giants bowed out to Arsenal's north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC 12 months ago, Manchester United FC having got the better of them the previous season. In 2007/08 it was Arsenal themselves who began a poor sequence for Milan against English sides when they triumphed at this stage, meaning the Italian club's last three campaigns have been ended in the last 16 by English opponents with a home defeat on each occasion.
Previous meetings
• The encounter four years ago, when Milan were the reigning champions, was the teams' first in the UEFA Champions League. The London leg ended goalless with Arsène Wenger's team progressing thanks to goals from Cesc Fàbregas and Emmanuel Adebayor inside the last six minutes at San Siro.
• The teams in Milan on 4 March 2008 were:
Milan: Kalac, Maldini, Kaladze, Pato, Gattuso, Nesta, Pirlo, Kaká, Ambrosini, Oddo, Inzaghi (Gilardino 69).
Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Senderos, Gallas, Clichy, Fàbregas, Diaby, Hleb (Gilberto 90), Flamini, Adebayor, Eboué (Walcott 71).
• It was the first time Milan had been beaten by English visitors. In 11 previous competitive contests Milan had won seven and drawn four, that sequence including a 2-0 win against Arsenal in the UEFA Super Cup in February 1995, lifting the trophy by the same aggregate score.
• Milan's recent struggles mean their record now shows seven wins in 12 two-legged ties against English opponents.
• Arsenal have won seven out of eight such contests, most recently a 3-1 aggregate defeat of Udinese Calcio in this season's play-off round. Theo Walcott scored the only goal of the home first leg and was also on target in the 2-1 away win after Robin van Persie had scored Arsenal's equaliser.
• The Gunners also beat Parma FC in the 1994 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final in Copenhagen.
• In four of Arsenal's last six visits to Italy they have come out on top. In 27 games against Italian clubs their record is: W13 D8 L6 (W5 D4 L4 away).
Match background
• Arsenal's 3-1 defeat at Olympiacos FC on matchday six – they were already assured of finishing as Group F winners – was their first of the campaign. Their other away games ended in a draw at Borussia Dortmund and a win at Olympique de Marseille.
• The Gunners have won three of their last 12 European games on the road including the play-off victory at Udinese.
• Massimiliano Allegri's Milan won their first two home games in Group H against FC Viktoria Plzeň and FC BATE Borisov but lost 3-2 against FC Barcelona on matchday five.
Team ties
• Zlatan Ibrahimović scored two second-half goals to give Barcelona a 2-0 lead at the Arsenal Stadium in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg. The Gunners levelled on the night but lost 4-1 in the return.
• During a two-year spell in England with Manchester City FC, Robinho scored in a 3-0 home victory against Arsenal in November 2008. He also faced the Gunners at this stage in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League as Real Madrid CF bowed out, losing 1-0 at home and drawing 0-0 away.
• Thierry Henry struck a hat-trick in Arsenal's 5-1 win against FC Internazionale Milano at San Siro in the 2003/04 group stage. He also scored three times at AS Roma in 2002/03.
• Flavio Roma and Sébastien Squillaci played together at AS Monaco FC between 2002 and 2006.
• Van Persie, Mark van Bommel, Urby Emanuelson and Clarence Seedorf have all played together with the Netherlands national team.
• Emanuelson and Thomas Vermaelen were team-mates at AFC Ajax between 2005 and 2009.
• Bacary Sagna played in the AJ Auxerre youth system when Philippe Mexès was in the first team.
• André Santos is part of the Brazilian national team alongside Thiago Silva, Pato and Robinho.
• Alberto Aquilani played in the Premier League with Liverpool FC in 2009/10 while Kevin-Prince Boateng had spells at Tottenham (2007/08) and Portsmouth FC (2009/10).

Football Club Zenit vs Sport Lisboa e Benfica

Zenit inspired for immediate Portuguese reunion

Having eliminated FC Porto in their last fixture, for their first UEFA Champions League knockout round tie FC Zenit St Petersburg face more Portuguese opponents in SL Benfica. FC Zenit St Petersburg have an immediate reunion with Portuguese opponents as their first participation in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds pits them against SL Benfica.
• The Russian champions drew 0-0 at FC Porto on matchday six to finish second behind APOEL FC in Group G. For Benfica, this tie represents a first appearance in the knockout rounds since 2005/06; their last three campaigns all ended in the group stage.
Previous meetings
• For the first meeting between the teams, Zenit will be looking to uphold their unbeaten home record against Portuguese opposition. In three fixtures they have won two and drawn the other.
• The most recent encounter came on 28 September when the Russian club beat Porto 3-1 with Roman Shirokov's two goals overturning James Rodríguez's early opener. Danny then secured the points 18 minutes from time.
• Zenit also drew 1-1 at home to CD Nacional in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League play-offs, losing 5-4 on aggregate, and beat Vitória SC 2-1 in the UEFA Cup group stage in October 2005.
• Benfica lost on their last visit to Russia, going down 2-0 at PFC CSKA Moskva in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup round of 32. That set up their only aggregate defeat by a Russian side with the home game ending 1-1.
• That CSKA loss ended a six-match unbeaten run home and away against Russian sides, Benfica having won three and drawn three before that defeat. Away from home they drew two and won one.
Match background
• A 1-0 defeat of FC Oţelul Galaţi enabled Benfica to finish as Group C winners having also won the reverse fixture in Bucharest. They also won at FC Basel 1893 and drew at Manchester United FC. It was the first time the two-time European champions had finished top of their UEFA Champions League group since 1995.
• With draws at Trabzonspor AŞ and FC Twente in this season's qualifying rounds Benfica have suffered only one defeat in their last nine European away games. That came in Portugal when fellow Liga side SC Braga won 1-0 to complete an away-goals triumph in last season's UEFA Europa League semi-finals after the Lisbon leg had ended 2-1 to the home side.
• The 1961 and 1962 European champions were last in this stage in 2005/06 when they beat then holders Liverpool FC 1-0 at home and 2-0 away with Luisão on the scoresheet in the first leg. Benfica's run came to an end in the quarter-finals when eventual champions FC Barcelona beat them 2-0 in Spain after the first game had ended scoreless.
• Apart from the win against Porto, Zenit also beat FC Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at home and drew 0-0 with APOEL in Group G.
• They have a unbeaten home European record dating back to 30 September 2008 when Real Madrid CF won 2-1 in a UEFA Champions League group stage fixture. Including qualifying ties they have since gone 15 games without defeat, winning 11 and drawing four.

• Artur played for AS Roma in 2008/09 under Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti.
• Zenit's Bruno Alves and Danny, and Benfica's Eduardo and Ruben Amorim are team-mates with the Portuguese national team.

• Vyacheslav Malafeev has played for Russia against Portugal twice, his team losing 7-1 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in Lisbon on 13 October 2004. Earlier the same year he came on as a second-half substitute against the host nation at UEFA EURO 2004 with Russia losing 1-0 in Lisbon; he conceded a second goal as Portugal won 2-0.
• Aleksandar Luković plays for Serbia alongside Nemanja Matić. Danko Lazović retired from international football last March.
• Nicolas Lombaerts is a team-mate of Axel Witsel for Belgium.
• Eduardo and Domenico Criscito were team-mates at Genoa CFC in 2009/10.

TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen e.V. vs Futbol Club Barcelona

Leverkusen look to derail Barcelona juggernaut

Bayer 04 Leverkusen won all three home games in the group stage but stopping an FC Barcelona side averaging four goals per away match is a bigger task altogether for Robin Dutt's side. Bayer 04 Leverkusen could not face a more formidable threat to their hopes of reaching their first UEFA Champions League quarter-final in a decade as they welcome FC Barcelona for their round of 16 first-leg tie.
• The fact that Josep Guardiola's holders have averaged four goals a game on their travels underlines the size of the task for Robin Dutt's men, who finished ahead of another Spanish side, Valencia CF, in the group stage.
Previous meetings• Leverkusen had never faced Spanish opponents before taking on Barcelona in the quarter-finals of their triumphant 1987/88 UEFA Cup campaign. Milton Tita scored the tie's only goal past Andoni Zubizarreta, now Barcelona's sporting director, in the second leg at the Camp Nou and Erich Ribbeck's side went on to beat RCD Espanyol in the final.
• The teams traded 2-1 home wins when they met again in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League first group stage, with Michael Ballack lining up against Carles Puyol and Xavi Hernández.
• Barcelona won 2-1 in Leverkusen and 2-0 at home in the following season's second group stage. Puyol, Xavi and Andrés Iniesta featured for the Blaugrana.
Match background• Group E runners-up Leverkusen are bidding to reach the last eight for the first time since 2001/02, when they advanced to the final before losing to Real Madrid CF.
• Leverkusen posted three straight home wins in the group stage, including a 2-1 success against Valencia, but have reason to be wary of Spanish opposition. In last season's UEFA Europa League they won four of six home games, but the two exceptions were against Club Atlético de Madrid (1-1) in the group stage and Villarreal CF (2-3), their nemesis in the last 16.
• Leverkusen's overall home record against Spanish opposition is W5 D3 L4.
• Group H winners Barcelona scored 12 goals in their three away games in that section and have lost just one of their last nine European fixtures on their travels.
• Barcelona's last seven trips to Germany have yielded four wins and three draws, their last loss that 2001 reverse in Leverkusen. Their most recent visit was in the 2009/10 round of 16 when they drew 1-1 with VfB Stuttgart en route to a 5-1 aggregate success. Their overall away record against German teams is W8 D10 L5.
• Barcelona beat Fortuna Düsseldorf to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1979.
Team ties
• Guardiola's first four appearances in Europe's premier club competition as a player came against FC Hansa Rostock and 1. FC Kaiserslautern in autumn 1991. Barcelona, that season's eventual winners, won both home legs but lost both away.
• Ballack was in the Chelsea FC side denied a UEFA Champions League final place in the 2008/09 semi-finals by Iniesta's added-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw in London that earned Barcelona an away-goals victory. Ballack had helped Chelsea finish above Barcelona in the 2006/07 group stage with a 1-0 home win and 2-2 away draw.
• In the UEFA EURO 2008 final Ballack's Germany lost 1-0 to the Spain of Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta and Cesc Fàbregas. Puyol's header earned Spain another 1-0 win against Germany in the 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
• Eren Derdiyok and Tranquillo Barnetta helped Switzerland shock Spain 1-0 in their opening match in South Africa. Besides Puyol, Xavi and Iniesta, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, David Villa and Pedro Rodríguez were also in Spain's side.
• Derdiyok and Barnetta were brought down to earth by Alexis Sánchez's Chile in their next match, succumbing 1-0.
• Michal Kadlec was in the Czech Republic team beaten in a UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier in March 2011 by the two Villa goals with which the Barcelona striker became Spain's record scorer.
• Daniel Alves and Adriano were part of the Sevilla FC side that beat Manuel Friedrich's 1. FSV Mainz 05 2-0 on aggregate in the first round of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup.
• Alves and Renato Augusto are Brazil team-mates. They lined up together in a 3-2 friendly loss to Germany in August 2011, with Leverkusen's André Schürrle and Simon Rolfes featuring as substitutes for Germany and the former scoring.

Olympique Lyonnais vs Athletikos Podosferikos Omilos Ellinon Lefkosias

Lyon aiming to end APOEL's fairy-tale run

APOEL FC have already made history as the first Cypriot side in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and Olympique Lyonnais will be determined that their exploits end there.Having already become the first team from Cyprus to reach the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League, APOEL FC will try to extend their history-making run when they visit Olympique Lyonnais for the first leg of their last-16 tie.
• APOEL have enjoyed an impressive campaign so far, topping Group G. Rémi Garde's Lyon finished runners-up behind Real Madrid CF in Group D only after an astonishing escape act in their last fixture – winning 7-1 at GNK Dinamo Zagreb to overtake AFC Ajax on goal difference.
Match background • Lyon have experience on their side entering this contest – they are competing in the round of 16 for the ninth season running. That said, after three successive quarter-final appearances between 2004 and 2006, they have fallen at this hurdle in four of the last five campaigns, the only exception being 2009/10 when they reached the semi-finals. Last term, under Claude Puel, they bowed out at this stage against Real Madrid.
• Lyon have lost at home only once at this stage of the UEFA Champions League, 2-0 against AS Roma in the 2006/07 edition. Their Stade de Gerland record in round of 16 matches is W4 D3 L1.
• The Ligue 1 side have had mixed fortunes at home this term. After wins against FC Rubin Kazan and Dinamo Zagreb in the play-offs and group stage respectively, they lost to Real Madrid and were held 0-0 by Ajax – a result that looked to have cost them qualification prior to that victory in Zagreb.
• While Lyon have never faced Cypriot opposition before, this is APOEL's second tie against a French team – they went down 3-0 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain FC in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round. Jean-Luc Sassus hit the only goal of the first leg in Nicosia before Paul Le Guen and Xavier Gravelaine inflicted further damage on APOEL in Paris.
• Ivan Jovanović's APOEL recorded three successive away draws in the group stage, avoiding defeat at FC Shakhtar Donetsk, FC Porto and FC Zenit St Petersburg. Including the qualifying rounds and play-offs, their away record this season is W2 D3 L1. In those six games their miserly defence has conceded only three goals, keeping three clean sheets.
Team ties
• APOEL assistant coach Yiannos Ioannou, the club's record holder for goals and appearances, featured in their 1993/94 encounters with PSG and also in Cyprus's famous 1-1 home draw with France in 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifying – a result that contributed to France's failure to make the finals.
• APOEL's Sanel Jahić came off the bench for Bosnia and Herzegovina in their 2-0 home defeat by France in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying in September 2010. Hugo Lloris featured for France with Jimmy Briand and Anthony Réveillère unused substitutes.
• Jahić was born in Strasbourg and as a youngster was on the books of FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. Similarly APOEL's Tunisian international Tijani Belaid was born in Paris and played for Paris FC's youth team.
• Aílton came off the bench to score for FC København in a 3-1 defeat by Olympique de Marseille in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 32 – a result that confirmed a 6-2 aggregate loss. As a substitute for FCK in the group stage of the 2008/09 competition, he saw Bafétimbi Gomis hit AS Saint-Étienne's opening goal in a 3-1 loss to Les Verts in Copenhagen.
• Briand and Yoann Gourcuff helped France beat Nuno Morais's Portugal in a group match at the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship final tournament.
• Briand was a scorer for France in a 2-0 win against Athos Solomou's Cyprus in a European U21 Championship qualifier in October 2005.
• Constantinos Charalambides and Marios Ilia suffered a 4-0 defeat in France with the Cyprus national team in a 2006 World Cup qualifier in October 2005. Along with Marinos Satsias they also featured in the earlier 2-0 home reverse in October 2004. Satsias is a veteran of an even heavier loss to Les Bleus – 5-0 at the Stade de France in UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying.
